Dear Colleagues,
The 50th CEDAW session ended on the 21st of October 2011, during which, the CEDAW Committee adopted a general statement on Rural Women.
In this statement the Committee urges states parties of CEDAW and UN member states to consider the needs and concerns of rural women, and clarifies the scope of state obligation in relation to the rights of rural women. Various upcoming initiatives at the UN will enable states and CSOs to discuss and plan for more effective implementation of programmes that address the rights of rural women including the upcoming Commision on Status of Women Consultation in February 2012, as well as the Rio + 20 summit in June 2012.
We at IWRAW Asia Pacific welcome the new GS; confident that it will enable more targetted lobbying and in turn positive change in the area of rural women’s rights.
Please circualte the statement released by the Committee widely.
In solidarity,
